MMES was formed at Mold in 1975 by a small group of individuals interested in building and running small gauge steam locomotives. In 1979 work was started on the present 5/3 inch elevated track within the grounds of the Welsh College of Horticulture, WCoH. The initial circuit of around 670 feet, a passing loop, station and steaming bay were completed in the early eighties. By this time the membership had grown considerably and the Club was able to add other features to the layout.

In recent years an external small gauges track has been added to cater for enthusiasts in this category.

In 2001 a major extension to the 5/3 inch track was commenced and which saw completion in 2004. This impressive extension that includes an elevated viaduct was opened by the local Member of Parliament, David Hanson, and allows a ride of around 1700 feet.

Official opening of the new track extension took place on Saturday 4th September. A ceremonial plaque commemorating the completion of the extension was unveiled by local Member of Parliament David Hanson. The Principal and Vice Principal of the Welsh College of Horticulture were also in attendance. Following the unveiling all dignatories attending were taken on an inaugural ride around the new track.

Official Guests and members of the society

Representatives from our two fellow North Wales societies at Llandudno and Wrexham were also kind enough to attend the ceremony.

Over the past few years the club has raised and donated various amounts of money to local charities.
